Jolly Grant Airport, the airport for Dehradun, is the most common way to reach Mussoorie by air. The road trip up to the hills is one of the nicest parts of the journey if you plan it well.
How far is it, and how long does it take?
The airport is roughly 60 km from Mussoorie. Most drives take about 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic through Dehradun and on the hill road. Weekend and holiday afternoons are the slowest.
The route
From the airport the road runs through Dehradun city and then climbs from Rajpur Road towards Kolhukhet and Mussoorie. The last stretch is a winding mountain road with many hairpin bends and lovely valley views.
Tips for a comfortable ride
- Pre-book your cab so a driver is waiting at arrivals, especially on late or early flights.
- If anyone gets motion sickness, eat lightly before the drive and ask for a front seat.
- Share your hotel location in advance. Some Mussoorie and Landour stays have narrow lanes where larger vehicles cannot go.
- Carry a light jacket. It can be 8 to 10 degrees cooler in Mussoorie than in Dehradun.
- In winter and during monsoon, allow extra time for fog and slow traffic on the hill road.
Which vehicle should you choose?
A sedan suits two to three people with normal luggage. For families, groups or lots of bags, an Innova Crysta or a Tempo Traveller is far more comfortable on the hills.
